2018 Book Cover Contest

Hey potential contestant - we want to see your book cover! Here's a chance to show off the "marketing face" of your book and possibly win a cash prize for it. If you want to throw your book cover in the mix, there are three steps to the process.

First, read through the Submission Rules and Formatting CAREFULLY before anything else.

Second, you must register for the contest by clicking on the Contest Registration button below.

Third, you must submit your entry by clicking on the Email My Entry button below and filling out the Contact Us form or emailing us your entry directly (info.ubmc@gmail.com) through your email service.

Again, read through the Submission Rules and Formatting CAREFULLY before submitting an entry. Also, pay close attention to the contest opening and deadline dates below.

Submissions Open: January 15, 2018

Submission Deadline: March 15, 2018

Cost: $10 per submission (limit two submissions per person)

Contest Objective:

This contest is about the marketing presentation of books, particularly elements typically presented with book covers and not the book interior. For example:

  • Book title

  • Cover art (e.g., graphics or illustrations)

  • Cover design (e.g., placement of title and author name, typography, readability of the typography, allusion to the story, conveyance of the genre)

  • Endorsements or reviewer blurbs on the cover

  • Book descriptions (e.g., "back cover" copy)

Although cover graphics are greatly important, those aren't the only things we're looking at. Also, there are many aspects of a book's presentation that can hook a potential buyer - e.g., reviews on Amazon, chapter excerpts, author notoriety, and publisher notoriety, to name some - but we're considering only those aspects typically found on the "outside" of a book (see the Submission Judging Criteria below). We will not consider publisher or author notoriety in our judging. Here are some examples illustrating elements to be considered.

Submission Rules and Formatting:

  • Entries of the following are allowed

    • Book covers of self-published titles, whether they have been previously published or are not yet published

    • Book covers can be ebook covers with single, front cover graphics or book covers designed for printing (e.g., like print-on-demand books) with front, spine, and back cover graphics
  • Only authors of the titles the book covers are designed for, or designers of the book covers, may submit their book covers to the contest

  • Entries that do not follow the format rules will be disqualified

  • Entries containing nudity, profanity, or disturbing gore or violence will be disqualified

  • Limitations: Contest entry fees are non-refundable. UBMC is not responsible for entries that are disqualified due to rule violation.

Submission Formatting (Book Cover Entries - For eBook)

  • Entries must be submitted as either a PDF or a jpeg file. No other formats will be accepted.

  • Label your entry by the title of the book the cover was designed for (e.g., The_Hobbit.pdf, The_Old_Man_and_the_Sea.jpeg)

  • The entries must not exceed 10 MB per entry

  • Entries must be submitted through email only

  • Entries must include:

    • The front cover

    • Book description

  • The book description and front cover should be separate files (i.e., one PDF or jpeg file for the front cover and one PDF or jpeg file for the book description).

    • Endorsements or reviewer blurbs can be included with the book description but are not required (see Some Things To Consider below)

  • If your ebook entry has a spine and a back cover, it is still eligible for submission

Submission Formatting (Book Cover Entries - For Print):

  • Entries must be submitted as either a PDF or a jpeg file. No other formats will be accepted.

  • Label your entry by the title of the book the cover was designed for (e.g., The_Hobbit.pdf, The_Old_Man_and_the_Sea.jpeg)

  • The entries must not exceed 10 MB per entry

  • Entries must be submitted through email only

  • Entries must include:

    • The front cover

Some Things To Consider:

Although reviewer blurbs or endorsements aren't required and won't hurt your score if you don't have them, they may improve your score if you include them on your cover. Keep in mind that the overall objective of the contest is the book's marketing presentation. Does it catch your attention and make you want to read it?
